KARACHI: Army Polo and Tent Pegging Championship will be held from 25th to 31st March, 2013 at the Malir Garrison Polo and Saddle Club.
The Championship is being sponsored by leading commercial banks. Polo is a fascinating game played on horseback between two teams, each of four players score points by driving a wooden ball into the opponents’ goal. Tent pegging is a cavalry sport which will be played on the last two days of the event.
Polo has been played in Karachi since the British rule at the Polo Ground which used to be behind today’s Pearl Continental Hotel. However, later the game was shifted to Race Course Polo Ground in Karachi Cantonment where many prestigious international teams visited regularly.
Polo in Karachi was actually looking for patronage which it found in Malir Garrison Polo and Saddle Club that possesses two green grounds, a club house, a riding school and an elaborate stabling arrangement. An organized Club is now in place duly registered with Pakistan Polo Association. The tournament is being held to revive the glory of the game in the metropolis.
Nine different teams representing Mangla, Multan, Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta, Gujranwala and Bahawalpur Zones are participating in the tournament. The final of the championship will be held on Sunday, 31st March, 2013 at Garrison Polo and Saddle Club in Malir Cantonment.
