No respite to irrigation water theft

Ratodero, Sindh: There is no respite to the theft of irrigation water in many areas of Sindh, as influential feudal lords still enjoy impunity and no serious action being taken against them.

The irrigation department is busy in cosmetic efforts limited to postings and transfers. SDOs of Dadu Canal, Irrigation Department, have been transferred on the instructions of the Irrigation Secretary as they failed to stop theft of irrigation water in their respective areas.

SDOs of Tajodero and Larkana subdivisions have failed to close down over 60 modules of influential landlords and growers which were erected in the bunds which also caused immense damage to the bunds, said irrigation department sources.

The perennial season has already started due to which canals and branches are flowing to their capacity enabling the peasants to sow paddy seedlings but the tail end growers are still complaining about the non-receipt of irrigation water. Executive Engineer, Dadu Canal could not be contacted despite several attempts.

The tail-enders have demanded of the higher authorities to stop these operating illegal modules forthwith and deploy Rangers to control the situation. They also demanded to register criminal cases against all those involved in theft of irrigation water.
