Notices on petition challenging Arts Council elections

Karachi: The Sindh High Court SHC on Monday issued notice to the official respondents in a petition of member of Arts Council of Pakistan, challenging the elections of Arts Council of Pakistan.

Petitioner Najmuddin Shaikh, cited government of Sindh through chief secretary, Administrator City district government Karachi, Registrar Joint stock companies, vice president and honorary secretary Arts Council of Pakistan, chairman Arts Council of Pakistan, chief election commissioner Arts Council of Pakistan, and director Industries and Cooperative Societies as respondents.

He said that before the elections of Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi he had written application to chief election commissioner and chairman of Arts Council of Pakistan asking them for providing complete lists of members but they did not provide the lists.

He through his counsel Irfan Aziz further submitted that elections of the Arts Council were held on 25 December 2012 and his group boycotted the elections under protest as chief election commissioner chairman Arts Council of Pakistan did not provide complete lists of candidate to him. He said that lists were provided to the persons of their own choice.

He alleged that respondents have illegally elected the persons of their own choice and used unnecessary efforts to get them triumphed.

Therefore he prayed to court to direct respondents to conduct fresh elections and declare elections held recently null and void.

Headed by Justice Maqbool Baqar, division bench issued notice to the respondents and put off the hearing till February 14.
