Politics: MQM tables ‘Overseas Pakistanis Facilitation of Voting Bill 2013’

Islamabad: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement MQM on Tuesday tabled a private member bill “Overseas Pakistanis Facilitation of Voting Bill 2013’ in the parliament for giving right of vote and registration of overseas Pakistanis.

Parliamentary Group Leader of MQM in National Assembly Dr. Muhammad Farooq Sattar has stated this while addressing a press conference along with MNA’s Waseem Akhtar, Shaikh Salahuddin and other party leaders at National Press Club NPC.

He said that the overseas Pakistanis are 4 to 5 percent of the total population of the country. He added that they are playing a vital role for country economy sector development. He said that National Database Registration Authority NADRA had issued around 5.5 million National Identity Cards to Overseas Pakistanis.

He said that nearly 4.5 million overseas Pakistanis had registered as voters but 1 million still not registered as voters. He demanded that these overseas Pakistanis should be registered.

“It was the responsibility of Election Commission of Pakistan ECP to register them besides devising a mechanism to give them the right to vote in general elections” he added. He said that the Supreme Court SC had also given decision and directed the Election Commission for registration and facilitation of overseas Pakistanis.

There was no obstacle in smooth passage of the bills as all political parties have already given their mandate to the ECP in this regard, he added. Replying to a question, Farooq Sattar said that the postal ballot an easy system however courier service procedure would also adopted. He said that Pakistani embassies in foreign countries would play an important role in this regard.
