Promulgation of consumer rights laws demanded

KARACHI: FPCCI Standing Committee on “Brands Protection & Promotion” and Standing Committee on “Consumer Rights Protection” in Association with Consumers Association of Pakistan, Helpline Trust, Consumer Foundation, National Forum for Environment and Health and Consumers Forum celebrated “World Consumer Rights Day recently at FPCCI Auditorium, FPCCI Head
Office, Karachi.

In an unprecedented move major Consumer Associations, NGOs active in the consumer rights and awareness area and their top management was present on the occasion and unanimously agreed to form a joint platform “Pakistan Consumers Federation” to strongly represent the consumer’s cause. All major organizations signed a joint declaration for this purpose so that their resources can be combined for the promulgation of relevant laws at federal and provincial legislature and the representation of the federation can be ensured at the highest level in all government institutions, forums, Accreditation bodies and implementation groups.

While addressing the audience on this occasion, Shaikh Rashid Alam—Chairman FPCCI Standing Committee on “Brands Protection & Promotion” said that safety of consumer rights, safety of industries working with documented economy and contributing to the exchequer and safety of Intellectual Property of legitimate brands operating in marketplace is his prime concern. He said that all association should unite to get the “Consumer Protection Act” promulgated in Sind province. He said that mushroom consumer organizations are being created for the personal self-interest and exploitation and it necessitates that joint efforts be launched to further the consumer cause.

On the occasion, Kaukab Iqbal, Chairman Consumer Association of Pakistan addressed the audience and strongly urged that “Consumer Protection Act” should be implemented in Sind Province. He further said the in all three province this act has been passed but in Sind Assembly it could not get the required import importance. He stated that once the new provincial assembly sworn in, all consumers associations will create huge public pressure to get the law approved
on priority.

Huma Bukhari, Chairperson FPCCI Standing Committee on “Consumer Rights Protection” said that the role of Consumer rights
association is of paramount importance in any developed society. She made the formal announcement of joint platform of all associations “Consumers Federation”.

Addressing on the occasion, Haji Fazal Qadir Khan Shirani—President Federation of Chambers of Commerce & Industry highlighted the importance of “World Consumer Rights Day”.

Muneer, President India Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry strongly appreciated the role played by the Consumer associations and consumer related programs on TV channels in spreading the awareness and curbing the menace of counterfeit and fake products.

He warmly hailed the establishment of “Consumers Federation” and assured all necessary assistance from FPCCI and his organization in implementation of Consumer laws in Sind province.

The occasion was marked by Consumer Care Conference in which Rafiq Rangoonwala President Pakistan Foods Association, Qaiser Waheed of PPMA also highlighted the importance of genuineness, manufacturing care and support for industries observing consumer laws.

Finally, Ghulam Omer Kazi, Secretary PSQCA appreciated a lot the role of Consumers Associations and explained the role and mode of working of PSQCA for ensuring the consumer rights and consumer care.
