Karachi: Samar Anjum and Nasir Iqbal brushed aside top ranked players in the finals of inaugural DHA Karachi International Squash Championship to clinch women’s and men’s titles respectively here Friday at DHA Asif Nawaz Squash Complex.
The unseeded Samar Anjum, who elbowed out favourite Zoya Khalid in semifinals, kept her giantkilling run intact and overcame fourth seed Rushna Mehboob after a tough battle in the summit clash.
Rushna took the first by 117 score but Samar responded with an identical 117 score in the second set to equalize the scoreline at 11. Rushna again took the lead winning the third set 116 to take a 21 lead.
Rushna fought hard in the fourth set to finish the match but Samar has other things in mind. It was Samar, who eventually managed to pull the fourth set 1311 and leveled the arrears. Samar then took the command in the decisive fifth set and led the game 61 but then Rushna retired hurt from the climax after a 55minute battle.
Meanwhile, second seed Nasir Iqbal stunned favorite and Pakistan No 1 Amir Atlas Khan in men’s final. Ranked 69th in the international circuit, 19yearold Nasir easily claimed the title after Aamir retired hurt from the match only after 20 minutes into the match. Nasir was leading 119, 95 when Aamir abandoned the match.
