SBTA monitoring teams face problems in some areas

Karachi: Provincial Project Director/Secretary Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA) Dr Zahid Hasan Ansari on Wednesday said SBTA teams have been monitoring blood banks in city and other parts of Sindh province to ensure safe supply of blood and to take action against illegal blood banks owners.

He said Governor Sindh Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan in a recent meeting directed for action against those blood banks owners who were not maintaining quality and stranded in supply of blood as per criteria set by SBTA. He informed that Commissioner Karachi and other authorities concern would assist the SBTA as monitoring teams are facing resistance in Lyari, Surjani and Metroville areas.

He informed that 172 blood banks have been registered in the Sindh province so far, while about 160 illegal blood banks have been shut across the province since 1989. He said government authorities would provide assistance and security to SBTA teams in trouble areas.

He said blood banks should equipped with refrigerators, analyser readers, microscopes, water baths, blood bank coaches, generators, centrifuge machinery, haemoglobin meters and other equipment, otherwise teams would cancel their licenses if anyone is found running the blood banks without necessary equipment .

He said Hepatitis B and C and HIV-AIDS diagnosis kits were also be ensured at all the points to check the quality of blood as per law and for supply of safe blood to general public.
