Seminar “Local bodies and Media role” held

QUETTA: Local bodies system is basis and soul of democracy and with this problems can be better resolved at the lower level in Balochistan. There is need to improve local bodies system. It should be presented in the assembly and legislate afresh as local bodies ordinance was passed in haste during the previous regime.

These views were expressed by senior columnist Amanullah Shadezai, Senior journalist Saleem Shahid, Shah Baran Mandokhel and others while speaking at seminar “Local Bodies and Role of media” organized by AHSAS PK and OISD under Citizen Voice Project in collaboration with USAID here Wednesday.

Journalists, representatives of various organizations, former councillors and members of pressure groups attended.

Executive Director AHSAS Pk Watan Yar Khilji highlighted importance of local bodies system and ongoing project. He apprised the participants of objectives of project and urged importance of media for legislation to improve local bodies system and holding elections in the province.

Workshop appreciated Government of Balochistan for amendment in local bodies draft and its improvement and tabling it in the assembly. It would help strengthen democratic system at the grassroots level and resolving people’s problems.

Workshop suggested Balochistan Government to increase women seats in the system because ordinance adopted by the previous government has very small number of women seats. Seats should also be reserved for labourers and kissans.
