SHC directs CS, finance secy to submit compliance report

Karachi: The Sindh High Court SHC on Tuesday directed the provincial finance secretary and chief secretary to submit compliance report of the court’s orders regarding payment of salaries to KMC employees.

Headed by Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi, the division bench of SHC was seized with the petition pertaining to non-payment of salaries and pension to KMC employees. The KMC workers union, Sajjan Union, represented by counsel Nadeem Sheikh submitted that thousands of KMC were not being paid salaries for the last two to three months.

He stated before the court that chief minister had announced that the provincial government would release Rs. 850.21 million every month for the payment of salaries to KMC employees, but the Sindh government has not released the same for the last two to three months without any reason.

He said that there are 32000 employees of the KMC and 22000 pensioners, who were not being paid salaries and pensions for long-time.

He submitted that due to apathy of the government thousands of KMC employees were facing hardships and unable to bear their monthly expenses. Therefore, he prayed the court to take notice of the non-payment of salaries and direct the government to ensure payment of monthly salaries to the KMC employees, including pensioners, within the stipulated time.

Earlier, on January 31, the court had directed the secretary finance and chief secretary to take up the matter with regard to the payment of salaries with the CM on priority basis. The court had also directed them to resolve issue within seven days and submit compliance report.

On Tuesday, additional advocate general Miran Muhammad Shah requested court for time to submit compliance report. The court ruled that however secretary finance and chief secretary are cautioned that if no compliance report is made in respect of order of this court, appropriate order may be passed in this regard.
