SHC disposes of petition for extension of jail ward

Karachi: Sindh High Court SHC on Saturday was informed that due to delay in receiving funds from the provincial government work for the extension of the jail ward at Civil Hospital Karachi has not been commenced.

Headed by Chief Justice Mushir Alam, the division bench disposed of the petition after the Dow University of Health and Medical Science took up the project of extension and renovation of the jail ward for the treatment of ailing and wounded prisoners itself at the cost of Rs28 million and work will be commenced within seven days would complete in the eight months.

The Member Inspection Team MIT, a court official, had sent a reference to Chief Justice Mushir Alam regarding the noncompliance of the order of the then SHC judge, Justice Amir Hani Muslim, who had directed the extension of the jail ward to accommodate more ailing inmates.

The MIT submitted that he had sent the copies of Justice Muslim`s order of Feb 8 to all government functionaries for information and compliance of the order on the 9th Feb.

He stated that the CHK medical superintendent submitted a letter he had written to the health secretary expressing his inability to carry out this year the extension work of the jail ward, situated on the first floor of an old building on the CHK premises. The chief justice had converted the MIT`s reference into a petition on March 29.

On Wednesday, additional advocate general Miran Muhammad Shah, Qadir Siddiqui, additional medical superintendent informed the court that work of extension of the jail ward had not been commenced due to delay in receiving in receiving funds from the provincial government.

Court also directed that MIT1 shall regularly visit the subject work and report the matter.
