SHC issues notice on petition against police bribery

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court SHC Monday issued notice to home secretary, provincial police chief, and other police officials in petition calling for action against police officials, who allegedly detained petitioner and released him after taking bribe.

A single bench of SHC comprising Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi also issued notice to prosecutor general of Sindh and adjourned the matter to a date later be fixed by court’s office.

The petitioner, Syed Asif Hussain, submitted that ASI Javed and constable Mubashir, posted at SIU Jamshed Quarters, along with other persons in civil dress had taken away him and his brother Naveed from their residence on March 25, 2011 and confined them at Gurumandir CID cell unlawfully.

He said that police officials demanded bribe of Rs200000 and threatened of dire consequences if he failed to arrange amount.

The petitioner said that they were released after he paid Rs75000 to police officials. He prayed to the court to direct IGP Sindh to initiate departmental proceedings against police officials who kept him and his brother in unlawful detention and released after taking bribe.
