Sindh Madressa University to takeover S.M. Science College

Karachi: The first Syndicate meeting of Sindh Madressatul Islam University has decided to takeover S. M. Science College housed in three buildings located in the premises of SMIU, Karachi.

“S.M. Science College is housed in three old buildings of Sindh Madressatul Islam SMI – Hassanally House built in 1909, Khairpur House built in 1912 and Sardar House built in 1919. Therefore, according to the provision of SMIU’s act, it is part of SMIU. Hence, a request on behalf of the SMIU syndicate would be made to Sindh Government to declare S.M. Science College as a part of SMIU,” Syndicate, which met with Dr. Muhammad Ali Shaikh, Vice Chancellor, SMIU, in the chair, resolved.

In this respect it was decided that the employees of S.M. Science College, not willing to work with SMIU, should transfer to the nearby government colleges and those, willing to become a part of SMIU, should be given one grade higher than their previous grade according to the HEC policy.

The syndicate approved nominations of chairmen/chairpersons for initially opened five departments in SMIU. According to the decision Dr. Fouzia Kahn was nominated as a chairperson of Media Studies Department, Dr. Seema Jilani for Environmental Studies, Dr. Mehboobul Hassan for Business Administration, Dr. Safeeullah Soomro for Computer Science and Dr. Anjum Bano Kazmi for Education Department.

The syndicate approved appointments of 31 faculty members and 12 staff members of the university. Similarly, promotions and up gradation of SMIU employees on higher grades were also approved. The approval for creation and up gradation of some other posts for SMIU was also given by the syndicate.

The Syndicate members expressed satisfaction on implementation of Presidential Orders issued after May 18, 2010 with regard to SMIU and resolved that the remaining presidential orders should be implemented on top priority basis.

It was also resolved that the land on which 62 shops are built in the premises of SMIU is solely a government land, and its ownership lies with the government and Sindh Madressatul Islam University. It was decided that the legal procedure should be completed to get re possession of the occupied land.

The meeting decided that formalities for the possession of 100 acres of land, given by Sindh government to SMIU in the Education City, and which has been approved by Sindh Chief Minister, should be completed.

The Syndicate decided that a letter would be written to the Prime Minister of Pakistan for possession of a building, which was earlier given for SMIU by the federal government for SMIU’s Islamabad campus. In this regard three syndicate members, who are also members of National Assembly Dr. Azra Fazal Pechooho, Dr. Nafisa Shah and Syed Ameer Ali Shah Jamot will call on prime minister and shall make a request to him to order the possession of a building for Islamabad campus of the Quaid’s alma mater.

It was decided that Finance and Planning Committee of SMIU will review the budget for the university, prepared by SMIU.

The members were nominated on various committees. Justice Nadeem Akhtar, Rana Bhagwandas, former chief justice of Pakistan and sitting chairman of Sindh Public Service Commission and Mr. Abdul Waheed Qazi, former Cabinet Secretary and former secretary finance and secretary services, Sindh, were nominated as members of Selection Board. Justice Nadeem Akhtar will represent SMIU Syndicate, while latter two personalities would be its members as “persons of eminence”. Similarly, Justice ® Syed Deedar Hussain Shah was nominated as a member of Finance and Planning Committee, Muqeem Alam as member of Discipline Committee and Dr. Sikandar Mandhro as a member of Affiliation Committee.

The meeting endorsed decisions and steps taken by the vice chancellor of SMIU after elevation of SMI to the university level, in the emergency circumstances.

Syndicate also passed a resolution moved by Salaman Farooqui, Secretary General to the President of Pakistan, for appreciation of Dr. Mohammad Ali Shaikh, vice chancellor of SMIU, who put restless efforts for elevation of Sindh Madressatul Islam from school to a university level. Mr. Salman Farooqui said he had studied in S.M. College and was a president of the then students union, which was representing all educational institutions working under Sindh Madressatul Islam. Therefore he was eyewitness of Sindh Madressah of that time. He also had visited SMI before the period of Dr. Muhammad Ali Shaikh, but now when he saw the SMI, he found it totally different and new from the previous, in all aspects. And this all credit goes to Dr. Muhammad Ali Shaikh. Dr. Azra Fazal Pechooho, MNA and sister of President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari, seconded the resolution.

Earlier Dr. Mohammad Ali Shaikh gave presentation on the past, present and future of Sindh Madressatul Islam University, which was highly appreciated by the members.
