Sindh Madressatul Islam University completes one year

KARACHI: Sindh Madressatul Islam University completed one year on Friday after getting university status on 16 February 2012.

On this occasion, the SMIU organised a function to celebrate the first anniversary of its elevation to the university.

Sindh Madressatul Islam SMI was founded on 1st September 1885 by Khan Bahadur Hassanally Effendi and his friends as a boarding school with affiliation of Bombay University. At that there was no university or Education Board in Sindh. Sindh was also the part of Bombay Presidency at that time.

The SMI was upgraded to the college level on June 21, 1943 and then it received university status on 16 February 2012. Formally, the university status for SMI was announced by President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari on May 18, 2010 at a national conference organised by SMI on Quaide Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah at the Sindh Chief Minister’s House.

Later on the federal cabinet headed by then Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani approved the elevation of SMI to the university level and decided that the campuses of SMI would be set up in other provinces as the SMI being the alma mater of Founder of Pakistan QuaideAzam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, enjoys the national status.

At that time SMI was working under the federal education ministry, but after passage of 18th Amendment, it was given under the administrative control of the Sindh government. Then the provincial government took up the matter of SMI for giving it university status. Subsequently, the Sindh government passed the bill of Sindh Madressatul Islam University as an act on December 22, 2011, and then the Sindh governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan assented the charter of SMI University on February 16, 2012.

After that, besides the recruitment of faculty and staff members for the university, the Main Building of SMI was renovated, classrooms were set according to the moderns needs and computer laboratories were too equipped with the latest computer machines.

Afterwards, the process of admissions initially in five departments including Media Studies, Computer Science, Education, Business Administration and Environmental Studies was completed up to December 2012. Now the classes of the first batch of SMIU have been commenced from January 15. 2013.
