Six killed as ASWJ leader Orangzaib Farooqi survives assassination attempt

Karachi: Leader of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat ASWJ Maulana Orangzaib Farooqi was injured in a targeted attack, while six people including his guard, driver and four cops were killed in Gulshan e Iqbal area, in the remit of Gulshan e Iqbal Police Station on Tuesday.

The victims were identified as Saleem, Abdul Wakeel, Asad Khan, Waheed Khan, Imran and Arshad. Police sources said armed attackers riding eight motorcycles and a Hiroof van intercepted the vehicle of Maulana Orangzaib Farooqi near Moti Mahal Gulshan e Iqbal Block1 and opened indiscriminate firing. Three people died on spot and three others later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Police sources said at least two attackers were injured in retaliatory firing of guards and policemen. However, all the attackers managed to fell along with their injured men.

The bodies and injured were rushed to Liaqat National Hospital, where a large number of ASWJ activists gathered and burnt tires.

ASWJ spokesman Taj Muhammad Hanfi confirmed the killing of driver and guards in firing. However, he said the condition of Maulana Farooqi was stable.

Violence erupted in different areas of the city as the news of attack on Maulana Farooqi spread. Angry mobs protested in Gulshan e Iqbal, Nazimabad, Qayyumabad, Aisha Manzil and other areas of city, suspending the flow of traffic. They burnt at least two vehicles.

Police and rangers rushed to the disturbed area to control the situation. They also made some arrests. However, many city areas remained very tense and markets and bazaars closed. Traffic flow was seriously hampered in different areas due to protests and violence.
