Peshawar: Speakers at a seminar titled “Engaging Stakeholders of Peace” urged the need for proper legislation to stop the growing use of ammonium nitrate and fertilizers in terrorist attacks.
The program was aimed to sensitize the masses about the possible wrong use of fertilizers in terrorist acts across the country, aimed to discourage the sale and purchase of fertilizers and other such products, having dangerous chemical components.
The seminar was organized by a nongovernmental organization Awareness Movement for an Alert Nation AMAN here on Wednesday at a local hotel.
Besides others, representatives from fertilizer companies, fertilizer dealers, academia from Agriculture University,
a large number of students and farmers from various areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Federally Administrated Tribal Areas FATA took part.
The panellist, Col (r) Akhtar Ahmad and Col (r) Muhammad Shamim while speaking on the occasion said that Improvised Explosive
Devices IEDs were homemade bombs constructed and deployed in ways other than in conventional military action.” Pakistan is among those countries where the use of IEDs in terrorist activities has been increased manifold since 2007, they added.
“Some more 11,000 Pakistanis have lost their lives and over 21,000 have been injured in the past one decade in terrorist activities where in most incidents IEDs were used” they informed.
The participants on the occasion express their views about the technical dimension of terrorism, the enigma of Improvised
Explosive Devices and how to combat the menace including the Technical Dimensions, counter pilferage measures.
The participants also gave their suggestions of how to tackle with the growing use of fertilizer in terrorist activities and said that the government needs to properly legislate the production and distribution
Process in which the fertilizer companies and dealers should be made bound to keep track on the fertilizer being supplied to market.
They also asked the stake holders to play their role in mending way which could lead to end the use of fertilizer in terrorist activities.
After the panellists had shared their expertise with the audience, the concluding session consisted of question and answers which also gave an opportunity to the audience to give their recommendations.
