Sports: Arif looks forward to Lausanne meeting

Karachi: Pakistan Olympic Association POA President Arif Hasan said the meeting of POA and Pakistan Sports Board PSB officials with International Olympic Council IOC officials in Lausanne Switzerland will solve the issues, which have surfaced between POA and PSB.

“POA enjoy full support of provincial and departmental associations and PSB has no right to instate an adhoc, when the setup has been formed after elections, which the Supreme Court also recognizes,” Arif told reporters at Karachi Press Club on Monday.

PSB has claimed to have dissolved the POA setup and have instead instated an adhoc committee. But POA officials has rejected PSB’s alleged incursions in POA matters saying that POA is not even affiliated to PSB and therefore PSB doesn’t have any constitutional right to impose an adhoc committee on POA.

According to Arif, IOC with whom POA is directly affiliated to, has been monitoring the raw between POA and PSB and has summoned both the organization’s officials in Lausanne on 15th February to discuss the ongoing issues.

“We are confident that a decision will be taken in the best interest of sports in Pakistan. And we also believe that our stance is at par with the IOC Charter so we are looking forward to the meeting,” he said.

He said that the elected setup of POA is looking to safeguard the interest of sports in the country.

Meanwhile, he added that the incursion of PSB, which is a governmental agency, in POA matters is against IOC charter and IOC in the past has shown that it would never allow political or governmental interference in any National Olympic Committee.

“IOC in the past has banned countries like Kuwait and now IOC has recently banned Indian Olympic committee for going against IOC charter. So I think PSB’s interference has pushed us in the same dangerous zone, where we could face IOC sanctions,” Arif said.

However, he said that the issue need to be solved as it would only harm sports in the country. He said that he has always been ready for dialogues for the welfare of sports.

He said general council of POA will meet on February 12 to discuss several important issues including taking the mandate of the affiliated associations ahead of the important meeting in Lausanne.

Arif said that all the federations, who are backing PSB in its unconstitutional interference in POA matters, are those e sports federations whose cases are in the court of law.
