Sports: Medallists to protest against ‘re-holding’ of National Games

Karachi: All medal winners of the 32nd edition of National Games, which was organized by Punjab Olympic Association in Lahore in 2012, will stage a peaceful demonstration in front of Punjab Assembly Hall Lahore today Friday against re-holding of National Games.

The Pakistan Olympic Association POA considers the reorganizing of National Games as illegal as the 32nd edition of the event has already been organized last year by the elected officials of POA.

However, the Interim Committee of POA, imposed by Pakistan Sports Board PSB on POA, has scheduled the reorganizing of the 32nd edition of the National Games from June 28 in Islamabad.

International Olympic Council IOC has already issued strong warning to Pakistan for governmental interference in its affiliated POA.

PSB, a governmental agency, is at loggerheads with POA President Arif Hasan, who was been elected as the association’s chief for the third time last year.

PSB claims that the election of Arif Hasan was against the Sports Policy of Pakistan but Arif has claimed that POA directly falls under the jurisdiction of IOC, which doesn’t have any such policy. IOC has also issued a statement that it considers Arif Hasan, who became president after elections, as the right person to be leading POA.
