Islamabad: According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, only 19% of Pakistanis play a sport which involves moderate physical exercise.
A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked “For entertainment or exercise, do you play any sport which leads to a moderate increase in breathing and heart rate, for example power walking, cricket, running, cycling” Responding to this, 19% said yes and 79% said no. However, 2% did not give a response.
Respondents who said ‘yes’, were then asked “usually how many hours a day do you play a sport that involves moderate physical exercise” Responding to this, 27 % said less than half an hour, 38% said up to half an hour, 21% said 12 hours, 4% said 23 hours, 2% said 34 hours, 4% said more than 4 hours and 4% said 0 hours. However, 1% did not give a response.
The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International.
The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2647 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during May 13, 2013 – May 20, 2013. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 23 per cent at 95% confidence level.
