Karachi: A “Thalassaemia day” was celebrated in Sindh Medical Collage, Karachi Monday, organized by Omair Sana Foundation. Dr. Irfan Ashraf, director of Professional Development Centre SMC and Dr. Tariq Rafi Vice Chancellor S.M.C. were present.
Dr Tahir Sultan Shamsi, the Executive director of NIBD and vice President of Omair Sana Foundation, delivered a lecture on awareness, management & Prevention of Thalassaemia to academicians of collage.
Initial soft tests were conducted in the camp. More than two hundred doctors, medical students were tested for their Thalassaemia status. A team of OSF led by Mohammad Akbar (Manager Lab & Blood Bank) briefly shared basics of Thalassaemia Major/Minor, its propagation, social and economic ramifications & how to prevent in students of the medical college.
Omair Sana Foundation & Smile Student Society worked in close coordination and made the screening program successful. Dr. Qamar Jabbar form OSF was also present on this occasion The Thalassaemia Screening program is a part of overall Thalassaemia Prevention strategy of Omair Sana Foundation.
Dr Tahir Shamsi said that Thalassaemia is genetic disorder. It transmits from parents to their children. Premarital test could eradicate this menace from the society. Unawareness is the basic cause of it prevalence so, awareness is the answer to create a bulwark on its spread.
