Two women among three polio workers shot dead

KARACHI: Three polio workers, including two women, were killed and one other injured in an attack in Qayyumabad here on Tuesday. The police said that killing of polio team workers was a bid to terrorize and stop polio teams in the city so that they abandon the polio campaign.

SHO Korangi Industrial Area, Tariq Raheem, told PPI that two groups of armed motorcyclists targeted two anti-polio teams in Street-6 A in Qayyumabad.

The assailants opened indiscriminate fire on a polio team, killing three polio workers and injuring one other while a passer-by also suffered bullet wounds in the incident. Spent casings of 9mm pistol were found from the spot and police had sent them to forensic lab for inspection.

Eyewitnesses said that there was no police security with the polio workers and the assailants fled from the spot.

The bodies and injured were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for an autopsy and treatment respectively. The victims were identified as Anita, 35; Akbari, 31; and Fahad Khalil, 19, while the injured were Salma, 35; wife of Jaffar and Syed Ali Asghar Shah,70, son of Madad Ali Shah. According to JPMC Deputy Executive Director Dr Seemin Jamali, three people were brought dead in the hospital while two of them were critically injured.

Touching scenes were witnessed at the JPMC morgue where families of the victims received bodies of their loved ones.

Talking to PPI, mother of Anita said that she had three young daughters and was spending her life hand to mouth with her family in Garden.

Victim Fahad’s cousin, Waqas, said that Fahad left behind two brothers and two sisters, and he was the youngest among them. “He was not only the youngest brother of the family but also youngest among his cousins. “He was a very jolly boy and everyone loved him. Our family was very upset at his killing and we demand government to immediately arrest culprits involved in this act.”
