Karachi: The main University Road Karachi urgently needs widening including redesigning and reconstruction to cater the needs of millions of citizens using this busy thoroughfare of the city.
Running from Jail Chowrangi to Safoora Goth this main road remain congested with traffic due to widespread encroachments on both flaks. The road section from New Town to Hassan Square is badly encroached by car dealers, public transporters, fruit sellers, vendors and even an illegal goat market (Bakra Mandi) operates here. Crippling traffic jams are witnessed on this section during peak hours.
The situation of the section of road from Hassan Square to NIPA Chowrangi is not different due to encroachments of eateries, restaurants and illegal parking. People suffer a lot due to slow movement of traffic particularly at Hassan Square. Similarly, Sammama Market, Mosimiyat and Safoora Goth sections of the road are also narrowed due to encroachments, vendors and illegal parking.
The condition of road from the Civic Center to Safoora Goth is very poor, with potholes here and there. Road carpeting has been removed from many areas due to overflow of gutters and some sections of the road between Safoora Goth and Karachi University are hardly motorable. Every year huge amounts are spent for the repair of this road, but the basic issue of drainage is never solved, resulting in damage of the repaired portions of the road within months.
Sources said in the era of Gen Musharraf Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has agreed to reconstruct the road but the project was never materialized. Different city governments tried to initiate action to remove encroachments on this road which include shops, some portions of bungalows and apartment buildings, but due to lack of political will these encroachments were never removed.
This important road needs urgent redesigning, widening and reconstruction on modern lines to make it one of the model roads of Karachi, said Ex-MPA and amir of Jamaat-e-Islami district East chapter Muhammad Yunus Barai. He said not only Karachi University, NED University of Engineering and Technology and Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) are situated on this road but many other private universities and colleges are situated here. He said thousands of students and teachers also use this road daily. He said the University Road also serves as alternate approach road to the Superhighway and hence has a lot of importance. He said this road has remained neglected for more than a decade and people of the area suffer a lot. He asked the Sindh government and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to order early widening and reconstruction of the University Road to facilitate people.
