Vegetable merchants demand to stop direct supply of Onion from Afghanistan to Punjab, Sindh and India

Peshawar: Vegetable and fruits wholesale merchants have demanded the local administration to
immediate stop direct supply of Onion to Punjab, Sindh and India, which being importing from neighbouring Afghanistan.

Addressing a press conference here at the Press Club, the Central President All Pakistan Agriculture Produce Traders Federation APAPTF Malik Sohni said that more than 40 trucks carrying Onion from neighbouring Afghanistan entered via Torkhum border to Pakistan.

He, however, said that the trucks were directly supplying the food consignment loading with Onion to Punjab, Sindh and India, bypassing the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which is causing acute shortage of the commodity and registering high prices in the local vegetable markets. He further said that the merchants and traders have also inflicted huge financial losses due to direct supplying of Onion to other regions.

“We will not allow to direct supply of Onion from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to other provinces, he warned. He said that the Onion firstly to be supplied in required quantity in the Peshawar vegetable markets, and openly auction there, then the food consignment dispatch to Punjab, Sindh and India.

Accompanied by the Federation Vice President, Rehman Ghani and Malik Nasarullah, he urged the Police, and district administration to extend fully cooperation to stop the illegal supplying of Onion to other provinces. “If the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continuously bypass in supplying of Onion from Afghanistan, then the Federation would be seized the food commodity in the Peshawar, he warned.

He demanded of the Deputy Commissioner Peshawar to impose section 144 for illegal supplying of Onion from Afghanistan to other provinces, and India. He said if the illegal supply of Onion was not stopped immediately, they would strongly protest against it.
