Calls for holding students union elections

LAHORE: Secretary General, Jamaat e Islami, Liaqat Baloch, has called for Students Union elections all over the country to train the youth for shouldering their responsibilities in practical life in accordance with the constitution, the manifestoes of the political parties and the order of the Supreme Court.

Talking to a students’ delegation at Mansoora on Monday, he said the students were the real asset of the nation and the country, and had to play an active and constructive role in the development of the nation and the country.

Liaqat Baloch said that under the law, young men aged eighteen were entitled to cast vote. He said that almost forty per cent of the country’s population consisted of the youth, which had to play important role in national life and politics. Therefore, they must be imparted practical training of politics through the Students Unions at college and university level.

Liaqat Baloch said that the political parties lacking discipline besides the ruling elite including bureaucracy, feudal and capitalist class had always been averse to the political awakening of the youth and their involvement in democratic activities. These elements he said, never objected to the involvement of the younger generation in drugs or immoral pursuits but would not like them to carry on practical politics at the college, university level.

He called upon the government to revive Students Unions in line with the constitution and the Supreme Court order.
