First ever Paediatrics Bone Marrow Transplant Unit established

KARACHI: The National Institute of Blood Diseases (NIBD) has established a first ever Paediatrics Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and Genomic Department of the country.

Managing Director Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal, Barrister Abid Waheed Shaikh, on Thursday inaugurated the Paediatrics Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and Genomic Department at NIBD.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Barrister Abid Waheed, announced that Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal would provide the facility of bone marrow transplant to 100 children.

Director Medical Services of Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal Dr Javed Iqbal, Director Sindh Dr Adnan Majeed, Director NIBD Dr Tahir Sultan Shamsi, Organizer NIBD Bone Marrow Transplant Dr Saqib Hussain Ansari and others were also present on the occasion.

Barrister Abid Waheed further said that the Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal would provide financial assistance to NIBD in the procedure of bone marrow transplant.

He further said that the establishment of Genomic Department in NIBD was such a revolutionary step in the world of medical.

On the occasion, Barrister Abid Shaikh, appealed to the Prime Minister and the Sindh Chief Minister to provide resources and allocate space to NIBD for better facilitation of bone marrow transplant procedures.

Talking to media, Dr Tahir Sultan Shamsi, said that NIBD would provide the facility of diagnosing the genetic related diseases before time at the Genomic Department, adding that the patients of cancer and other diseases would also be treated through proper medicines at NIBD.

It is pertinent to mention here that 500 successful bone marrow transplant of the children have been conducted by NIBD, while 3000 children in a year suffer bone marrow diseases.
