NA resumes debate on the drone attack in North Waziristan

Islamabad: The National Assembly on Friday continued to discuss the recent drone attack in North Waziristan agency. Motion to this effect was moved by Minister for Science and Technology Zahid Hamid.

Earlier‚ speaking on the occasion‚ Leader of the Opposition Syed Khurshid Ahmad Shah said that important issues are to be discussed in the House but the absence of the Ministers at this stage is of grave concern.

Shaikh Rashid Ahmad said that due to price hike commodities of daily use are out of the reach of the common man. He said that the issues being faced by the common people should be properly discussed in the House.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that the members of the House and the people of the country are unaware about the dialogue process with Taliban. He said that the government must clarify its position in this regard.

Minister for Science and Technology Zahid Hamid clarified that the elections for the Chairman of four Standing Committees are underway due to which some members are not present in the House. He said after the completion of the election other members and Ministers will join the proceedings.

On the request of the government the Opposition members who had earlier walked out from the House joined the proceedings and delivered a unanimous statement saying that they will continue to boycott the proceedings till the Prime Minister takes them into confidence and gives a policy statement about the dialogue with Taliban on Monday. On this the members belonging to opposition parties except MQM staged walkout from the House.

Taking part in the debate‚ the speakers said that the government should initiate dialogue process with Taliban and demanded that drone attacks must be stopped to ensure the success of the dialogue.

The speakers said that peace should be given a chance but the dialogue with Taliban should be unconditional.

They said till now about 370 drone attacks took place in the country and 90 percent of these were in North Waziristan. They said that the drone attacks have shattered the economy of the country.

Those spoke on the occasion include Tahira Aurangzeb‚ Shaikh Salahuddin‚ Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar‚ Chaudhary Jaffar Iqbal‚ Salman Baloch and Nazir Khan.
