KARACHI: Chairman, Association of Cleft Welfare Trust, Prof Dr Zubair Abbasi on Saturday said that the cleft lip and cleft palate cases are common in rural areas of Sindh and such cases are generally reported from low-income groups of society.
He expressed these views while talking the media at a launching ceremony of free operation & treatment of cleft lip and palate in a private hospital. Association of Cleft Welfare Trust in collaboration of Saifee Hospital Trust Karachi is providing treatment and operation facilities to children with cleft lip and palate free of cost.
Prof Zubair said malnutrition, smoking, vitamins deficiency and socio-economic problems are the major reason behind the occurrence of such cases. He said there is shortage of institutions at government level to treat such patients.
He said aim of launching free cleft lip & palate treatment and operation service is to provide state-of-the-art facilities to poor patients under one roof. He said this treatment is very costly and poor people could not afford its treatment.
He said there is dire need of spreading awareness among public and proper diet for pregnant mothers to avoid such issues. He said “Prevention is better than Cure”.
Dr Arzoo Azeem said ratio of occurrence of cleft lip & palate cases is currently two in every 1,000 live births. She said cousin marriages, environmental issues and malnutrition of mothers are behind diseases like cleft lips, cleft palates in newborn babies.
She said treatment of children with cleft lip & palate requires team work which is not available in public institutions. She said team of specialists like maxillofacial surgeon, plastic surgeon, ENT surgeon, psychiatrist, dentist and speech therapist is needed perform this surgery.
