PMDC president justifies recent election

Karachi: President Pakistan Medical & Dental Council PMDC Prof Dr Masood Hameed Khan on Thursday said that if PMDC election were not be held in time it would have created an administrative vacuum and harmed medical education sector; therefore, the election was held after consultation with legal experts.

He expressed these views while addressing a press conference at Dow Medical University of Health Sciences DUHS here.

Dr Masood Hameed said the propaganda about the registration of 19 medical collages in a day is baseless and all these institutions had been registered by PMDC after proper inspection.

He said it is the responsibility of PMDC to look after the issues of medical education and registration of medical institutions in the country.

He admitted that number of cases of mismanagement and fake registration had been done in past, but the new PMDC management has already sent such cases to the courts and National Accountability Bureau NAB. He said no new medical and dental collage had been registered since 2011; however, many cases of registration are in pipeline.

He said despite the all odds the PMDC is working hard to overcome the existing problems facing by the medical institutions. He said many complaints of patients against doctors are pending and the PMDC would respond on all these issues soon. He stressed the need of strengthening the regional offices of PMDC in order to get better results in medical education sector.
Prof Masood Hameed said some elements were misleading the people over PMDC election. He assured that he is ready to resign once 72member PMDC council is completed and demands so. He informed that 35 members of PMDC have been notified so far after election and 16 more were waiting for notification. He further said seven cases are pending in courts and re-election of PMDC would be held once council members are completed.

He said a preplanned propaganda against PMDC by some vested interests would further damage the reputation of this institution. He announced that re-inspection of all medical colleges would be started soon, especially of those institutions which had gotten dubious registrations in past.

To a question about possible amendment in the third term of Vice Chancellors VCs of medical universities, he said the provincial assembly is a proper forum and its legislator can amend any law. He said people should accept the laws of land in letter and spirit.

He announced that PMDC has launched Short Message Service SMS for guidance of people. They could lodge their complaints on cell number 03332515881 or on email
