LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has given formal approval to reorganization of the governing body of Lahore Development Authority and preparation of the master plan of Lahore Division. He directed that urban planning be made in accordance with the needs of the modern age and a master plan be evolved for transportation, traffic, water supply, sanitation and drainage. He also directed that a strict accountability system be devised to root out corruption from the authority and stern action be taken without any discrimination against corrupt officers and staff and cases against them be sent to AntiCorruption Department.
He was presiding over a meeting of Lahore Development Authority as its chairman, here today. Chairman Planning & Development, Secretary Local Government, Secretary Housing, Special Secretary Finance, Commissioner Lahore Division, Director General LDA, Managing Director WASA, MD TEPA and other members of the governing body were present. The Chief Minster while addressing the meeting said that there is a need for institutional reforms for making LDA a public service oriented institution in the real sense.
He said that an effective strategy be adopted for the welfare and solution of the problems of the common man. He said that evolving a comprehensive and effective system for purging the authority of corruption and resolving problems of the common man is of vital importance therefore rapid progress should be made in this direction. He also directed that modern
training be arranged for the capacitybuilding of town planners.
The Chief Minister also directed to ensure early implementation of the agreement signed with Iski of Istanbul for improving water supply, sanitation and drainage system. The Chief Minister granted approval to setting up of separate commissions for speedy disposal of disputes between the authority and the citizens and dealing with the matters regarding illegal buildings and housing schemes and directed that the committee headed by Chairman Planning & Development should submit its recommendations regarding constitution of the commissions within seven days. Shahbaz Sharif directed that LDA be operated on the pattern of Istanbul municipality and full benefit be taken of its experience in various sectors.
He also directed Chairman Planning & Development to submit final proposals regarding establishment of Building Control Authority and preparation of Master Plan 20132035. He said that development authorities throughout the world generate their own resources for civic amenities and LDA should also evolve a comprehensive strategy for increasing its resources so that maximum facilities could be provided to the citizens.
The Chief Minister said that corrupt and inefficient officers and staff have no room in the authority and effective measures be adopted to purge the authority of such elements and the cases against corrupt officials be sent to AntiCorruption Department immediately. The meeting also gave approval to the appointment of Khawaja Ahmad Hasaan as the Vice Chairman of LDA.
Earlier, Director General LDA Ahad Cheema gave a detailed briefing on the authority relating to its future projects, implementation of bylaws, capacitybuilding of officials and other matters.
