Sugar Mills of Sindh stop crushing for non-availability of sugarcane

Pangrio, Sindh: The Pangrio Sugar Mill has stopped operating after a very short crushing period of 28 days. The sugar factory had started crushing of sugarcane in January and ended its operation on February 09, which is shortest crushing period in its history.

Meanwhile, Tando Muhammad Khan Sugar Mill has also reportedly closed its crushing operation and there are speculations that more sugar industries of province would follow it. Generally, the sugar mills used to start crushing from November 01 but this time very late crushing was started.

The reason behind early closing of mills is said to be decline in sugarcane crop cultivation in surrounding areas. The mills had to buy sugarcane from remote areas of province or from Punjab that caused severe financial losses to the mills.

Meanwhile, the growers Gulan Shah, Muhammad Yar Kumboh, Zafar Iqbal, Shaukat Khoso and Akhtar Khan told newsmen that cultivation of sugarcane has declined as the growers have switched over to other crops after non-payment of arrears by the sugar mills’ owners.
