Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi received the Global Hope Coalition's 2018 Special Distinction Award for Outstanding Leadership, in recognition of his efforts to enshrine the democratic principles and reinforce human rights and culture of peace.
Tunisian Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui received the Award on behalf of President Essebsi last Thursday on the sidelines of his participation in the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He handed over the award to the president during their meeting here on Monday at Carthage Palace.
In Monday's meeting, the foreign minister briefed the president about the most important results of his participation in the UNGA's session and the meetings he held with the heads of participating delegations, especially with regard to mobilizing international support for Tunisia's candidacy as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 period.
In an address delivered on behalf of the president, Foreign Minister Jhinaoui expressed appreciation for this distinction which is a message of support to the Tunisian people's efforts to lay the foundations of a democratic republic based on the supremacy of the law and human rights protection.
He added that the initiatives of the Tunisian president aimed at consolidating women's place and ensuring that full gender equality is part of the constant efforts to complete the democratic process and protect individual rights and public freedoms.
The Global Hope Coalition also paid tribute to personalities active in the field of the fight against extremism, and those who advocate tolerance, notably President of the Individual Freedoms and Equality Committee Bochra Ben Haj Hmida, who was distinguished as one of the 2018 Heroes of the Global Campaign Against Extremism & Intolerance.
